I get excited every morning as I get ready to go to work.  By the time I’m in my truck, I have a list of 10″To Dos”. At the end of the driveway, I have 15, as I pull into the parking lot, there are about 30. With so many levels of design and planning, the list in my head always seems possible until the first phone call … then the whole plan shifts to priority mode. My job is insane. There’s always a list, always a deadline, always a fire that needs to be put out … or …  one that just won’t start. It does get a bit overwhelming, but I love it! People tell me I am lucky, and I believe that’s true. I go into a wedding war, and come out a hero without so much as a scratch every time.

Last week, I actually had a boss! It seemed like the pressure would be off, and in a way it was. I still had to make the magic happen, but it felt truly great to work on an event without being in the driver’s seat.  Not that I am ready to be a passenger, but it was a nice break during one of our most intense years of business.

Earlier this year I got a call from Lindsay Landman, of Lindsay Landman Events in NYC. She told me she was doing a wedding at the Sagamore and I had come highly recommended for the location.  Lindsay is an event producer. She meets with the client, designs the event around the client’s desire and coordinates the day. Normally she would use her own people in NYC. Because she was so far from home, she asked me if I would create the flowers and use my connections to manage the rentals and lighting for her event. I was very excited to do it! I have not had a ” Boss” in years. Lindsay was gentle with me, but kept me in check during the whole process.

You may think, “Wow nice gig for her, all she had to do was hire David.” Not the case … Lindsay and her assistants worked like crazy to make it all happen. And that they did! Not to mention the fact that I am not easy to work with! You can see in my pictures that this event had a new flavor from the “David fare”. It was nautical but romantic, modern but traditional. I loved all the little details she created. When I see other designers’ work, I usually pick it apart and get irritated. On this event, I was very impressed and must admit, I even learned a few tricks.

Lindsay thank you so much for bringing me in on this event. I loved working with you and your team and am so glad your clients were thrilled. I swear, if you ever need me again, I will behave and read the spreadsheet!

Thank you Lindsay, Clifton Park Rental Company, Dawn at the Sagamore Hotel, and my team for BRINGING IT!

I LOVE the table with the place card holders– What was that? ALSO– Love the ‘wrap” on the bridal bouquet! Looks like a very cool wedding!

  • David Michael Schmidt

Thanks Marci! They are a bed of carnations, we normally don’t use them but I have to admit they did look great. The Bouquet handle was tricky because the lace was so fragile and in an odd shape but we worked out. The little knotted cord was the same as the one I used for the groom. So everyone was coordinated.

Are those lamps that you used for the center pieces? I like it! And I love the “ribbon wands” reminds me of being a little girl… yes I had one. Noted for my wedding lol. But was it the one day the wind was not blowing on Lake George? And PS I tried to boss you around at Erlowest, you just never listened to me :D

Thanks for the awesome blog post, the kudos and all of the help and support to make this event amazing. You and your team did an outstanding job and certainly confirmed that I picked the right partner in crime for this wedding. I couldn’t have done it without you. You went above and beyond for me and with me and I am grateful. Til next time!

This wedding was so much fun to be a part of! Lindsay was great and it was fun to see David working with another pro. The Sagamore was great as usual. What fun Helping David and Lindsay bring Trish and Ricks vision to life!

  • Lori

With the success of your business over the years, to say that you learned something from Lindsay is a huge compliment to her and her staff! It’s obvious that your reputation and the work that you and your staff orchestrates, is not a secret in New York State! What is a secret is that David sports apparel that states PROCEED WITH CAUTION…for a reason! Kudos to you both for a gorgeous event/wedding, and working well together! Love the bubbles!!!!

  • Lillian Spanker

I would say it was a mutual pleasure for both!!! Love the bubbles, Nautical is a fav of mine! Your work is amazing! The Spanker daughters are well on their way to that special day! Can’t wait to get together with Renaissance to plan the wedding of their dreams!! The sky is the limit!!!!

  • Adrian Fields

Sometimes I get so mad at myself because I spend so much time looking at your amazing pictures! Which flowers am I going to choose, the table setting, I love one thing from one wedding and then I see something else I love from another wedding. How will I KNOW!!!!! I know you will take your time in helping me make all the right decisions of my perfect day with my future husband Manuel! I just can’t wait!! Hope I don’t drive you too crazy!!! lol

  • Jessica Thaler

    David,
After our meeting today I need an event planner!! I’ve had too many thoughts about completely revamping my entire wedding, in order to accommodate the “Renaissance” style!! HELP! haha. Needless to say, you’ll be receiving my check in the mail shortly… appointment or not, how can I say no to my hearts desire?! Thank you so much for LISTENING to me throughout our meeting today… it feels wonderful to know that I can cross worrying about “the look” of my wedding off of my list!

Now, for a proper blog response, the pictures of the weddings you’ve done are amazing… everything looks completely flawless!! I cannot wait to work with you!

PS. I would also like a monogrammed dance floor… hehe
    All the best,
    Jess
