Lake Placid Wedding // 10.01.11

I think I speak for everyone in the wedding biz when I say, “I love when I get to do something different.” Don’t get me wrong, we do something different for every wedding, but when we get a new location … that’s always a blast!!  Last weekend we had a chance to work at the Lake Placid Golf Club.  Jill and Derek got hitched there on Saturday, and it was awesome!

I’m not sure the staff and crew we worked with feel the same way, but I know Michael, James and I had a great time putting this one together.  Those of you who know me understand that I can be a bit of a bulldozer when I walk into a room.  The crew at LPGC rolled with me and once they saw the dust settle from the DMS storm … they loved It!! Catherine and Donald, I swear I will never touch the antler chandeliers if I’m allowed back in the room. Promise.

Jill and Derek picked this location because it’s where they spent a lot of time during the years they were dating, and of course … for the views.  Jill was not sure about all the wood in the room. She was afraid her storybook wedding would be labeled “Adirondack”. When we first met, there was talk of draping the room, new chairs, crystal chandeliers and bringing in custom lighting. The more I looked at the plan, the more I felt we could give Jill that bit of glam she wanted without recreating Rome … .

It took some doing, but we left the room as we found it and created a design from the inside out.

For this wedding, I built my signature “Renaissance table” for Mr. and Mrs. and added two Alice chairs, which  worked perfectly in the space. The Renaissance table is a combination of banquet tables, capped with 1/2 rounds on each end. I created this for a bridal party in 1993, and now almost every ballroom I have ever worked, uses this configuration as an alternative  to a sweetheart table or the “Last Supper” line up.   At the Mazzone properties, they call it the Tuscan table because Angelo Mazzone is Italian. At Franklin Plaza, they call it the Captain’s table, because Michael Cocca loves boats. But the fact is… it’s the Renaissance table.

The linens I selected for Jill were a creamy colored thick heavy cloth with a bark-like pattern to mimic the wood texture in the room. That linen was then topped with a pale, gold-shear overlay with a rich, cream-velvet boarder over that. We topped the table design with vintage mercury glass compotes filled with warm melon color blooms. Each place setting had our new bubble glass charger with a custom-designed menu neatly folded into a hemstitch linen napkin. Each table held ten tall mercury glass votives accented with our crystal table frames. Instead of numbers, each table frame held a picture of a place the couple loves.

As guests were dropped off to enter the club, they ascended stairs that we decorated with monochromatic arrangements in 2 by 2 by 2 by 2 configuration.  I used the base colors of the wedding to get the design flow started.

I placed 30 floating candles on the fireplace in assorted size containers. The addition of a cream velvet band on each candle holder helped to connect the modern style of the candle with the warm feel of the velvet bordered overlays on the tables. It all goes to show that with the right guidance, you can have your dream wedding –  even if you think you can’t. The couple could not have been happier when they walked into the room. And I can not thank them enough for letting me get their design on.

Thank you, again, to the staff of LPGC, Coordinator Mim Frantz, Photographer Paul Reynolds, Rebecca at The Pink Orange, the talents of Make Me Fabulous and my team for six hours of road time to get it set.

Everything looks fabulous! That is the one thing I miss being the stationery designer is the venue all set up, but seeing the beautiful photos brings it all together!

Jill was so much fun to work with and I just loved her vision along the way. It was great to work with you!

David, it’s beautiful! I feel like a broken record everytime I post on your blogs, but damn, it’s BEAUTIFUL!! You and your crew are obviously geniuses. :-) I love that you brought the flowers outside on the stairway, perfect tie-in/teaser! I love it!! Keep up the amazing work… Just don’t get burnt out before July!!

Your work is amazingly transformative! Whether it is the plan A that’s on the clipboard or the contingency plans B, C, and D that you hid in your hip pocket! You roll out perfection! And now that the folks at LPGC have had the pleasure of the DMS Experience!! They will be craving more. You’re work is like a potato chip — addictive!!

What a beautiful wedding. I have been to several weddings at this location and I have to say this was stunning. Beautiful party, hope we get to experience another event you and your team create.

  • Martha Hilfinger

Jill & Derek’s wedding was spectacular. The ambience created with the flowers, view, music, candles, and even the rain was unforgettable. And the details did not go unnoticed, from the pretty dinner menu presented perfectly in the folded napkins to the dim, romantic lighting throughout dinner and into the party. What a beautiful, fun, and memorable wedding! So happy to be a part of Jill & Derek’s special day.

  • Damion

Wonderful blog right here.. It is tough to uncover top quality composing like yours as of late. I truly enjoy folks like you! VERY FRESH.

This was one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended. The color combination of the flowers was just awesome. so creamy and romantic. I absolutely loved the mercury glass accents, they really added to the “old Hollywood” feel. The candle light from every nook was SO warm and romantic Honestly there was no detail that was missed. You guys thought of everything! Jill was stunning from head to toe and Derek looked like the happiest guy on the planet. And to be honest, I’m GLAD it rained! The photographs with the white umbrellas are amazing.
Congratulations to Derek and Jill. Thank you for having me be a part of this most memorable day of your life. I will never forget how magical it was.

  • Mom

It was magical! Tears come to my eyes when I remember how incredible the day was and how happy my son is. A mother could not have asked anything more than the perfect setting all of the vendors created and the perfect Bride he married.

We came in and the staff was helpful transforming the space to fit what Jill and Derek envisioned for there wedding day, I think we nailed it. Everyone at LPGC was so great to work with we wouldn’t have been able to pull it of so effortlessly with out there help.
    Great job everyone!

Beautiful Space, I love how you can take any room and give it a style for the bride with out having to change every detail of the space. We have been to many events in this room and Love It! Im so glad you did not drape everything and try to change it. But you really made it work for Jill, She was so worried about her wedding and the day she met you all that changed. Thank you for being a great designer who listens to your customers.

  • Marilynn and Jack Dietz

Jack, my husband and Jill’s cousin, and I have been to literally over 75 weddings. Some of them simple, many of them extravagant.
I can honestly say that we have never experienced a wedding that combined such beauty with so many personal and moving touches.
I could go on and on about so many wonderful details, but, since this post is associated with the florist, bravo to all of your artful and elegant work!
